GENERAL SURGERY
General surgery is a technical discipline which covers general principles (such as wound healing, metabolic and endocrine response to wounding) in addition to treatment of systemic and local problems with surgical methods and which effected developments of various branches of surgery and medicine.
Surgery word is derived from the Latin word “chirurgiae” and means doing “handicraft”. Surgery is one of the oldest branches of medicine, which is based on the principal of surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, body deformations that cannot be treated with medications or other treatment methods or surgical removal of the diseased organ to restore it.
Surgery types are usually referred by the name of an organ or associated system. Goiter (thyroid gland), breast, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus, hernia, liver, gall bladder, endoscopic and laparoscopic surgical interventions are included in General Surgery. In case of categorization by systems, goiter, breast, esophagus, duodena, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus region surgeries as well as liver and hernia surgeries are included in General Surgery. General Surgery aims not only performing surgery but also preventing surgery by preventive medicine in some cases.
General Surgery Department works in coordination and cooperation with many disciplines because of its wide scope.
Coordination of all medicine branches are ensured by General Surgery Department especially in severe multiple organ injuries.
